It is one of the major impacts of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection on the pathogenesis of the cervix. The present paper provides a comparison between the connection between TP53 gene codon 72 (Arg72Pro) and the likelihood of developing genital warts and HPV-related cervical cancer in Iraqi women. PCR-RFLP was used to genotype 116 women (60 controls, 30 genital wart patients and 26 cervical cancer patients). TP53 C/C (Pro/Pro) was far more common in genital warts than controls (43.3 vs. 18.3, p=0.024), indicating that it was more prone to alliteration, whereas G/G (Arg/Arg) was preventative. Associations with the INK4a 540C T polymorphism were not discernible. These data indicate that TP53 polymorphism is associated with benign HPV-related lesions, whereas INK4a does not emerge as a strong predictor.
